Out of the Present

The film tells of the collapse of the Soviet Union by way of the story of the cosmonaut who was floating in space in 1991, thereby unexpectedly becoming the last Soviet citizen. When he left the earth in May, GORBACHEV was still in power. When he came back ten months later, the cosmonaut KRIKALYOV was congratulated by Boris YELTSIN. It is a film about citizenship seen in the right perspective; about the Russian revolution seen from space; but also about the experience of space during the Russian revolution.

Lingchi - Echoes of a Historical Photograph

The whole piece is based on a photograph of an execution by dismemberment in China taken by the French military in the early 1900s. The film's purpose is not to search for evidence or to revisit a historical scene, but to revisit this form of punishment, giving it a fresh look and a fresh portrayal. The film also enlarges on the theme, taking this ancient practice as a metaphor to express the relations of a hegemonic, globalizing First World with a disempowered Third World.

The Central Region

In director Michael SNOW's "The Central Region", a brilliant convergence of form and content, camera movement becomes the raison d'être. Rarely, if ever, has a film so clearly delineated the role of the camera in our reception and perception of the object filmed. To make the film (which took just five days to shoot), SNOW and technician Pierre ABBELOOS designed a mechanized camera that was able to move without human intervention in every direction imaginable.

From the East

Chantel Akerman's travelogue documentary is a valuable record of life in the Soviet Union before it finally succumbed to the gloss of Western imperialism and commodity culture. Taking her camera across Eastern Europe, the filmmaker simply filmed, in her words, 'everything that moved me.' The result is an abstract tableau combining disparate threads of human life. The camera serves as a passive spectator-observing a man sitting on a bench and watching a crowd of people leaving a concert in ebullient spirits.

From the Pole to the Equator

In the spring of 1982, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi discovered a collection of footage shot by the early Italian pioneer of documentary film and cinematographer Luca Comerio (1874-1940). As an act of providence, the director took on the task of re-editing footage from Comeria's travels around the world - Antartica, Eritrea, India, Italy, Tangiers, and Uganda. They attempt to critique the old footage, exposing how it supported suppressive ideologies.

The Taste of Koumiz

In the 1930s, the Soviet Union began the massive collectivization of its lands. Khirgiz nomads, whose culture depended upon rearing horses, were forced to join the collective farms - the kolkhozes. Those who resisted had their herds confiscated and were then deported to work camps. "The Taste of Koumiz" tells the story of one man who grew up as a nomad until his father, the head of his clan, was arrested and deported. While he was still an adolescent, an aunt who lived in the city took him in.

San Yuan Li

OU Ning, CAO Fei and U-thèque members made this experimental film by invitation for the 50th Venice Biennial. The film combines individual creativity and group cooperation.

Oh, Man

Both the Trento History Museum and the Italian History Museum of War of Rovereto came into being immediately after the First World War and have since then combined their exhibition programs with active research into twentieth century history. The Trento History Muzeum houses a vast and original collection of archives in progress. These include autobiographical writings (consisting of more than 600 texts) that describe the personal experience of soldiers and refugees during the First World War, in a border area of highly complex national identity.

Portrait

"Portrait" is a timeless film about human dignity and grace. A portrait of down-to-earth peasants. Not only we, as spectators, look into their faces, but they also look at us. This work of art changes opinions. It is a return to the original function of the cinematic device to document human life and the eternity of nature.

We

It is a film about the history of Armenia in the 20th century constructed following a compositional principle all its own between two thematic sections. At the beginning, the mass burials are shown and at the end, the repatriations which took place between 1946 and 1950. The work is of film historical importance for the way it established the method of distance montage and brought it to maturity.
