Full Lineup Unveiled for 14th Taiwan International Documentary Festival

The Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) proudly announces its complete lineup for the 14th edition, featuring almost 140 documentaries, over 200 screenings and a variety of related events. Held from May 10 to May 19, 2024, in various venues in Taipei and New Taipei City, audiences will have the opportunity to experience a diverse selection of documentary cinema from around the globe.

The programme includes four competition sections - the Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwan Competition, and TIDF Visionary Award -  each presenting 14-15 meticulously selected works chosen through a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, alongside nine originally curated sections.

As a cornerstone of Taiwan's cinematic landscape, TIDF remains dedicated to unearthing treasures of the country's film history. Audiences can anticipate masterpieces of Taiwanese documentary cinema and rare glimpses into amateur films, preserving and celebrating the country's cultural heritage.

 

 

Notably, TIDF embarks on its first-ever collaboration with an international film festival, the Ukrainian Docudays UA International Human Rights Films Festival, the programme "Exchange|Decade in Blue and Yellow: Ukrainian Documentaries" shedding light on the situation in Ukraine through documentary filmmaking.

 

Other highlights of the festival include the platform "Salute! Chinese Independent Documentaries," showcasing nine compelling films from Hong Kong and China under the theme "Cinema Protects Memories." Moreover, the festival's focus programme "Metaphors of the Times: The Reality Named Myanmar" shines a spotlight on Myanmar, highlighting its vibrant creative scene thriving amidst challenging political circumstances.

 

 

Finally, "Special Presentations" feature works from jury member, recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award, and directors in memoriam.

The accompanying programme promises a diverse array of lectures, screenings, exhibition, and live cinema, inviting audiences to engage with documentary filmmaking in all its forms.

Asian Vision Competition: Featuring 15 works from across Asia, exploring historical memories and present-day realities.

Appropriate Appropriation: Archive and More: Deconstructing pre-existing footage to craft new narratives, exploring the intersections of medium and memory.

Filmmakers in Focus | Double Angles from Slovakia: A showcase of two prominent Slovak auteurs, Peter Kerekes and Viera Čákanyová, reflecting on past and present through distinct cinematic lenses.

Focus Programme | Metaphor of the Times: The Reality Named Myanmar: A collection of 26 diverse films from Myanmar, offering layered narratives and metaphorical reflections on the country's reality.

Taiwan Spectrum | Untitled Reel: Amateur, Small-gauge Films and Others: Exploring the significance of amateur and small-gauge films in Taiwanese history, offering a unique perspective on societal development and personal memory.

Reel Taiwan: Floating Islands: Reimagining the relationships between Taiwan's main and outlying islands through experimental film works.

Exchange | Decade in Blue and Yellow: Ukrainian Documentaries: Reflecting on a decade of turmoil and resilience in Ukraine through intimate cinematic perspectives.
