An Afternoon in My Home

As TENG Nan-Kuang's son, TENG Shih-kuang inherited his father's love for photography. This film captures his wife playing with their three children in the yard while his father rests in the living room. The camera feels like a polite visitor without disclosing family privacy. Having said that, this film was a rare documentation in the 1960's.

Workers of the Fishing Village

Another fisherman's wharf has been built along the seashore, costing trillions. It soon becomes another tourist attraction. But illegal Chinese goods flood the local fish markets. There're less and less local fishermen now. They have to do construction works to maintain a basic life. The government is hard on them as well. But who's aware of these problems?

In 2003 I was searching for days in 1999 while mom was still alive. Traces of memory still alive. Then the memory left. Everything fades and becomes distant. But in a dream I had she was still by my side. So I made this. Mother’s image goes on forever in this film along with my sorrow.

Would Someone Listen To Me

Taiwanese Spider men aren't Hollywood stars. They are construction workers who spend their lives on cross-island highways. Most of them are Atayal people. They use simple equipment to go up and down the cliff-face to strengthen the mountains where mudslides are prone to occur. The pay doesn't match the risk, but there seems to be no way out either.

Grandma's Hairpin

In 1949, the Nationalist Government lost the civil war to the Chinese Communists and retreated to Taiwan with about 600,000 soldiers. My father was one of them. The soldiers thought they would soon return to their homeland. But they waited till 1987 when the ban on private visits to China was lifted. These war veterans were in an awkward position: China no longer feels like home, yet putting down roots in Taiwan have proved to be challenging.

My Homework

As a student, the director has an assignment to make a documentary. Circumstances have her that she has to stay home. So she picks up the camera to record her family. Her mother is very curious about the camera. The interactions and communications between the subject of filming and the object being filmed are revealed spontaneously.
