During the course of a year he shot the few square meters of street in St. Petersburg visible from his window. Road works to repair burst pipes become surreal comedy as the street is constantly torn up and refilled. A pothole transforms into a steaming vent. Passers-by drop litter, wait with bouquets of flowers, fall over drunk in the rain and roll around in the gutters. Life's small, banal incidents transform into abstract poetry and provide sweet comedy. KOSSAKOVSKY's video images are beautifully composed and edited: he's a great storyteller.

On Hitler's Highway-the Fabulous Art of Surviving

This unique road movie is rife with stopovers in hidden corners of a notorious highway built before World War II to facilitate the invasion of Poland and Russia by Hitler's army. Polish-born director Lech KOWAISKI curiously and relentlessly moves his hand-held camera in the vicinity of the highway that bears the corpses of Polish forced laborers working on the road. He encounters Bulgarian prostitutes, vegetable vendors, illegal immigrants, truckers, and gypsies living around the highway.

Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers

An intense visual odyssey filmed for over three years in eight different countries. From the explosive riot days in Genoa 2001 to $7,000 sex dolls in the US, "Surplus"explores the destructive nature of consumer culture. Stunning editing and breathtaking cinematography, against a familiar backdrop of cynical world leaders, corporate captains and Microsoft fanatics, the film focuses on the controversial anti-globalization guru, John Zerzan, whose call for property damage has inspired many to take to the streets.

From the East

Chantel Akerman's travelogue documentary is a valuable record of life in the Soviet Union before it finally succumbed to the gloss of Western imperialism and commodity culture. Taking her camera across Eastern Europe, the filmmaker simply filmed, in her words, 'everything that moved me.' The result is an abstract tableau combining disparate threads of human life. The camera serves as a passive spectator－observing a man sitting on a bench and watching a crowd of people leaving a concert in ebullient spirits.

From the Pole to the Equator

In the spring of 1982, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi discovered a collection of footage shot by the early Italian pioneer of documentary film and cinematographer Luca Comerio (1874-1940). As an act of providence, the director took on the task of re-editing footage from Comeria's travels around the world - Antartica, Eritrea, India, Italy, Tangiers, and Uganda. They attempt to critique the old footage, exposing how it supported suppressive ideologies.

Fishtank

Billingham's first film, "Fishtank", was Artangel's first commission for television, made in collaboration with filmmaker Adam Curtis and Illuminations TV for BBC2's acclaimed TX series. "Fishtank" described the compressed space of the flat; Ray sits alone in the kitchen, feeding the fish. Liz plays computer games. Jason swats a fly on the wall. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they argue. The father drinks a lot, the brother plays around a bit, the mother holds everything together.

Middle of the Moment

Film makers Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel traveled through Europe and Africa with these very different nomads for around three years. Resisting the lure of nostalgia of any kind they have created a film form, a cinepoem as they call it, in which the freedom of the nomadic life resonates from each individual shot as well as from the film as a whole.

Life of Children in the 21st Century

The film was shot in Dakar, from July 1999 to January 2000. It evokes the life of street children in the Capital of Senegal. Two roving gangs are followed day and night in the city by a camera that calmly records the reactions, point of view and silent thoughts of children who are drugged, raped and destroyed, children whose destiny stopped the day it began and who we see reduced to the lowest conditions of existence.

In the Dark

He is an old man, 80 years old and he has lost his sight. He lives in a small flat with a white cat. The man wants to do something useful and spends his days making woolen bags. The cat messes up his work and everyday is a continuous battle between the two of them. But the cat － besides being an enemy － is also his only friend. The blind man listens through the window to the sounds of the Moscow streets and explains to the cat what is going on. He also goes out on to the streets - trying first to sell the bags and then to give them away for free.

Gambling, Gods, and LSD

This documentary by Swiss - Canadian filmmaker Peter Mettler ponders the possibility of spiritual transcendence in the modern world. His journey takes him from a church in Toronto's airport strip where ecstatic Christians are overcome by the Holy Spirit to the Las Vegas studio of the inventor of "erotic electrostimulation" and finally to religious ceremonies in Southern India. Mettler wanted to show the human quest for transcendence and meaning. If the final work lacks a clear synthesis, this was a gamble that he was prepared to take.
