Four Walls and the World

That year, I returned to Pico Island in the Azores. I wanted to meet the writer, poet and whale hunter, José Dias de Melo. I wanted to spend a few days by his side. But when I arrived I learned that he had fallen ill and was in hospital. Nobody could tell me when he would be back. So I decided to wait... I took with me one of his last books "Poeira do Caminho". I peruse it to pass the time. And if I listen, I hear his voice...

Nobody Passes Perfectly

This is a subtle, humoristic and thought evoking film about the courage to change oneself radically. Tomka is right in the middle of such a process. He lives in a very loving relationship with his Lesbian girlfriend Lotte. Together they try to imagine what his transitioning will mean for their relationship. And Erik, was once a heterosexual woman, and has finally decided to live his life as a man.

Suspended Duty-Taiwan Military Training Regiment

This film delivers the story of some 4,000 young Taiwanese men who enlisted for the army established by General Sun Lijen in 1949. Receiving a short period of basic military training, they were informed they could return home to wait for reentering active service. However, they have never been officially discharged up to this day…

With his highly personal, grainy women’s portraits, Gerard Petrus Fieret’s photographic work has a unique quality. His international breakthrough means prices for his work are rocketing, but Fieret himself didn’t actually reap any benefits. He died in 2009 at the age of 85. At the end of his life a major discovery is made: in the mole catcher’s cottage, negatives which were thought to have been lost are discovered.

Countryside 35x45

In Russia a provincial photographer travels from one Siberian village to another taking 35x45mm passport photos of the villagers. Each client’s photo in a way summarizes that person’s life. Making a profound observation of the countryside life, the film unfolds as a poetic story about the people living at the crossroads of the two juxtaposed cultures: the old Soviet and the modern Russian ones.

Alda

The story of Mrs. O. is told through a combination of film footage and her own videos from a handy digital camera. She has Alzheimer’s type of dementia, and she records mini instructions for different daily activities, memories, thoughts and commentaries. The film represents a metaphor of memory loss of the whole society which is trying to forget past events that determined its current status quo.

Spirit

In the jungles of Borneo, an Iban father on the cusp of old age begins a river journey to seek help for his sick child. Troubled by recurring and uncanny visions, which arise out of the bizarre world of the rainforests, father and son are drawn into a final "encounter" deep inside the jungle. The film explores the conflict that exists between ancient animist beliefs and modern approaches to illness.

Near the Sea Mist

A trip without destiny along the coast of Maranhão, in the north of Brazil. A way of life governed by tides. Characters that invent boats and make them with their own hands. Perto da Maresia is a road-movie on the waters, that proposes a reflection about art and art-craft and questions the future of boats, explored as touristic symbols.

Albert's Winter

Albert's mother has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Albert is 8 years old and the world is still a mystery to him. He does the same things all boys do: in the winter, he throws snowballs, goes to school, comes home, plays outside. He tries to catch snowflakes on his tongue and goes to soccer practice. Apart from that, it's difficult to tell what's going on inside him.
