Memories of Overdevelopment 1980~2010

Pigaffeta is an Italian scholar fleeting to the Philippines with Portuguese sailors in the 16 century.

The film tells the story that he brought back a Filipino craftsman and this man became the first Pilipino traveling to Europe. TAHIMIK's whimsical imagination reveres the relationship between Robinson and Friday, and is the postmodern imagination of the colonizers and the colonized.

Disco DJ

In the late 1980s, Disco DJ as a trendy new profession began to emerge in the underground discos scene in Taipei. This episode unveils how DJs trained themselves in the early days. They also talked about the differences they experienced before and after the ban on dancing was lifted, and how the environment has changed along the way. Amid the colourful flashing lights and loud music, it was a time when more and more youngsters longed to become a DJ one day.

Models

Becoming a model requires a long training process. In addition to accumulating professional knowledge and life experience, models have to learn fashion trends and cooperate with different designers. This episode attempts to understand the modelling industry from the viewpoints of fashion models, designers, modelling agencies and the editors-in-chief of women's magazines.

Caricaturists

Directed by KAO Chung-li, the editor-in-chief of Sunday Comics at that time, this episode interviews many prestigious comic artists including TSAI Chih-chung, Tseng Cheng-chung, HSIAO Yen-chung, Kid Jerry, CHEN Uen, AO Yu-hsiang as well as filmmaker Edward YANG and writer CHANG Ta-chuen. It also touches upon the problems resulting from censorship and the public's view on comic books, offering a glimpse of Taiwan's comic book scene at that time.

Zookeepers

Animal keeping is in fact a low-paid and highly dangerous job. From the care, maintenance to management, the animal keepers must carefully observe and be able to understand the animals' nature and behaviours. Their respect for nature and sincere care for the animals can be felt through their interaction with the animals and their description of the work.

Quarry Workers

In Auhua village live a large group of Atayal people who work in the local quarry. The camera follows the quarry workers as they start their workday. The workers and the owner talk in turn before the camera, explaining their digging and mining methods in detail, recounting the difficulties they face at work. After making this episode, director HUANG Mingchuan turned his experience into his directorial work The Man from Island West.

Wedding Photographers

Getting married is one of the most important decisions in one's life, and wedding photography certainly has a great importance in Taiwan as well. As the family photo service popularised in the 1950s and 1960s transitioned into a wide range of photography services, the traditional photo studios have been gradually replaced by wedding photography companies. Such phenomenon also results in the conflicts between the artistic and commercial value of photography.

Unsung Heroes

Hailed as 'people's nannies', the police deal with all sorts of situations in our daily lives. In the face of people's high expectations, how do police officers deal with seemingly impossible tasks and what's their real thoughts on the complexity of such matters? In addition to the interviews conducted with the police officers, experts were invited to look into the problems of the existing structure, with an attempt to get closer to the hidden truth behind the uniform.

Journalists

Journalists are like the bridges that connect the public to the firsthand accounting of news events. Nothing seems able to stop them from reporting. In this episode, several newspaper journalists, magazine owners and editors talked about achievements and hardships they experience at work, presented alongside with an outsider's perspective on social perception of journalists.

Greasy Hands (Auto Mechanics)

Often called the 'black hands' in Taiwanese, the automotive and maintenance mechanics often have their hands stained black with grease. At work, they crawl underneath the vehicles or between the machines, but what do they do after work? Through interviews with maintenance mechanics, we get to understand their work and different aspects of their lives.
