Tarling Is Darling

The traditional ‘tarling dangdut’ music of Indramayu, an area on the Java island, is famous for its erotic dances and skimpily-clad singers. Muslim leaders wanted to have it banned, but it still circulates in the society. Jaham, a tarling dangdut songwriter is faced with a challenge from clerics who want him to write Islamic tangling dangdut songs. With the help of an erotic singer, Jaham writes down his religious pieces.

Turtle Rock

In a mountain village, 80-year-old grandma still labours hard for the family and prays everyday; her son does odd jobs in the woods and her grandson raises chickens. The piling mountains tightly bind them together and enfetter their fates, just as the giant ‘Turtle Rock’ at the gate of the village – it’s said that a turtle endeavoured to cultivate itself into the heavenly realm, but was struck by thunder and turned into a rock.

Railway Sleepers

Trains were introduced to Thailand in 1890 during the reign of King Rama the 5th. They were once symbols of modernity. However, with corruption and inefficient operation, the Thai railways failed to improve for many decades. Railway Sleepers explores the close connection between Thai people and Thai railways and takes the audience to experience a 2-day, 2-night trip from the north to the south.

Pushkar Myths

29 kilometres from Ajmer, in the heart of the Thar Desert is a lake city called Pushkar. To the Hindus of the world, it is second in holiness only to Mansarovar. During the full moon in the month of Kartik, the town and the nearby dunes become an enormous fairground. Filmmaker Kamal SWAROOP explores the ancient myths and politicking of Indian Gods as the heavens descend and the water in the lake turns holy.

The Moon the Sun and the Musketeers

On the border between Portugal and Spain lies a small town lost in time. At first glance there is nothing specific about Sendim. People have their daily routines. During daytime, time passes very slowly. But unlike other towns, the day is divided into two parts here. As the sun starts to set and darkness takes over, the world that does not exist anymore knocks on the door. The night here belongs to pagan Gods.

Lone Existance

For years he has stayed behind closed doors, uttering nothing to anyone. In that long quietude, memories pay unexpected visits. Unfamiliar faces come before his eyes along with images from the past. The common shapes of others intertwine and reflect what he has been reluctant to face. This is an attempt by the filmmaker to reappraise his relationship to the world through external observation and self-reflection.

Interiors & Exteriors

A one-take observational piece about the microcosm of Islamic practices and class segregation in Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka. Multiplicity within a Muslim community and the passage of people through one single frame documents this society’s interiors and exteriors.

In the Claws of a Century Wanting

This is a film about people living in one of the most densely populated spots in the world, surrounded by the Philippines' busiest global port. The film centres on four people in different stages of life, who are unknown to each other but share the same fate as the port will be expanded, engulfing the spaces where they now live, the spaces where their narratives unravel.

Home, Sweet Home

The director’s niece Nao suffers from epilepsy and is mentally retarded. When Nao was young, her doctor said that she would not be able to live long. This motivated the director to start filming Nao and her family in 1983. Now, Nao is 43, and everyone in her family has their own worries. Unprecedented in the history of documentary film, this is a 35-year record of a family.

The Haunted

This symbolic and suggestive film is a cinematic letter to an extinct race of tigers, and uses an almost hallucinatory force to conjure up a mythological, Central Asian world of yesterday. The majestic animal speaks to us about the historical changes that led up to its own extinction, but it lives on in the collective imagination of Turkestan as a sacred image of the soul.

Asian Vision Competition

15 titles selected from 621 entries. Each and every one of them has its own cinematic language, ideology and cultural background. Each possesses its uniqueness. Each contributes towards more independent and vibrant Asian documentaries.
