The Last Bolshevik

French director Chris Marker traces the long and difficult career of Soviet communist filmmaker Aleksandr Ivanovic Medvedkin (1900-1989) by exploring his lost and re-discovered work, digging through a mass of archival material and by interviewing his friends, family and colleagues. Le Tombaeu D'Alexandre is poetically didactic, a documentary exploring the history of the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) and, simultaneously, the history of Soviet cinema.

In the Mirror of Maya Deren

This documentary about the "mother of independent cinema" paints a rich biographical portrait of a pioneer in the development of independent American film. Deren was one of the great names of the American avant- garde cinema and this film follows the journey of the artist's fascination with Haitian voodoo, Her heroic refusal to make Hollywood compromise, and her tragic early death in 1961.

Pelé, Garrincha, dieux du Brésil

In the land of Samba, soccer is likened to a form of dance. In this film, an epic, comprised of rare and precious footage, we revisit the two big stars of the game: Pele and Garrincha. They are both Brazilian idols and government and propaganda tools. Their myth began life in 1958 and their life, career and personal destiny become tightly interwoven with the destiny of their nation. Born in poverty, they became 'a alegria do povo' (the pleasure of people). They are Brazilian symbols impossible to be replaced.

These Pictures Hanut Me - M.D. Alferd Jahn

Hans-Dieter Grabe documents the biography of a person whom he has observed both personally and on films for many decades. In 1997, Dr. med. Alfred Jahn, she's physician at the landshut children's hospital, begin spending his holidays and Ruanda serval times a year - largely at his own expense. This was because Ruanda have no children's surgeons. Jahn is not working for an organization nor does he have a team that he has brought with him to provide support. And no one can pay him for his work.

The Revelations of Madame Nerval

''The invisible is a mystery'', the astonishing Haitian voodoo priestess tells us at the start of the film. What follows are the implications, expressed with more than a hint of humor, in terms of society and identity, revealing the essential, fantastic and concrete link with Africa in this pragmatic and familiar religion. The film is chronicle of Gods and humans living together in the temple of madame nerve. It is the portrait of a large Priesterin-its dreams, it's contact with the spirit world and it's very special relationship to ''Criminel" the schutzheiligen of their temple.

Neues in Wittstock

The director Volker Koepp and the cameraman Christian Lehmann have been shooting films in this small town in Oderbruch in East Germany for many years. In five of these films they document the lives of three women, Edith, Elsbeth, known as Stupsi, and Renate, who received training and later jobs in the big, newly built jersey factory. The collapse of communism in East Germany brought about a lot of changes to their lives.

Missing Allen: The Man Who Became A Camera

Missing Allen is a detective story that leads the viewer into the American Heart of Darkness of Wako, Texas; Oklahoma City, UFO-believers and religious cults. The film is an investigation into the disappearance of Allen Ross, a filmmaker and cameraman from Chicago, who went missing in 1995, only a few weeks after he had shot a film about the Mississippi River together with director Christian Bauer. Four and a half years later, Christian Bauer sets out to find his friend. There are only a few possible explanations for Ross's disappearance. Has he dropped out of society?

Massoud, the Afghan

The author of the film "Massoud the Afghan", delivers to us in this work a superb testimony of Afghanistan. Christophe de Ponfilly give us his notebook of voyages that possess a particularly sharp and pleasant tone. The author is a good expert of the country. He has lived there since the beginning of Soviet intervention. One can feel the evolution of the country, the internal fights between the opposed to factions and the role of foreign powers, in particular that of the soldiers or envoys of Pakistan.

The American Way to Drive

A film about business and money. About searching for the meaning of life. About racism and social and ecological responsibility. A film about the love of life and about spirituality. A film about people doing whatever they do with their whole heart and entire strength.
