DAFilms Extended Online Cinema Presents ‘Reel Taiwan: Floating Islands’
TIDF is touring Taiwan in 2025. For our international audiences, we’re excited to collaborate once again with DAFilms, bringing 11 works from the 2024 TIDF programme, 'Reel Taiwan: Floating Islands,' online! In partnership with Taiwan Docs, the online programme will also feature 5 additional works by new generations of Taiwanese filmmakers. Centered around the theme of Taiwan's outlying islands, these films offer a diverse portrayal of the islands through the lenses of filmmakers from different eras.
'Floating Islands' is Taiwan’s largest experimental documentary project to date. The Firefly Image Company organised the artistic project in 1999, inviting 12 directors from different generations to create experimental film works about the 12 islands surrounding Taiwan. This programme, consisting of works originally shot on film and now digitised by Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, asks us to reconsider and reimagine the relationships between 'main island' and 'outlying islands' over the past decades.
The other selected works on the theme of Taiwan's outlying islands in recent years are equally diverse in forms and perspectives. Marshal Tie Jia – Turtle Island by HSU Chia-wei, uses the small offshore island of Matsu as a virtual green screen stage; Yannick Dauby’s She heard nothing in Matsu. She heard everything. constructs the image of Matsu through rich sound; Erica SHEU’s It follows It passes on, and don't be afraid let it show trace the cross-generational memories of Kinmen through her father’s eyes; and Beigu Islet by Chen Hsin-yu, explores the northernmost territory of Taiwan with a contemplative gaze.
