The works of experimental filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa (1969–2025) foreground his continuous exploration of the film medium and the cinematic apparatus. He attempts a different approach in each work, each characterised by a distinct rhythmic structure. Brimming with the possibilities of recording scenes and situations in public space, these works stand as a testament to his deep understanding and mastery of film materials and technical processes.
In 2016, sound of a million insects, light of a thousand stars marked TIDF's first encounter with Nishikawa. Crisp as a percussive beat, the less-than-two-minute film pushes the perceptual boundaries of documentary practice. This programme presents eight works, all screened on film. It is dedicated to Nishikawa, who passed away in the spring of 2025, in lasting remembrance of the wonder and inspiration he brought to the world of cinema.
