The Rhythm in Wulu Village

The Bunun aboriginal inhabitants of Wulu, knowing that their traditional culture faces the danger of extinction, have embarked on a project to preserve it and pass it on to their children. Two local teachers have organized classes on traditional weaving and music, and on the Bunun language. The choir they organized preserves the people's traditional singing, and accepts invitations to perform for other organizations. Coming in search of an answer to the question of culture preservation, the director collected the ideas of every aboriginal inhabitant of the village.

Someone Else's Shinjuku East

"Someone Else's Shinjuku East", which took 18 months to complete, moves from Taiwan to Japan, honestly exploring humanity and presenting the complexity of the real world with delightful subtlety. True to the spirit of documentary film-making, the directors spent a great deal of time following the lives of the Kabuki actors who are their subjects. Gaining their trust through devotion and sincere communication, the directors filmed characters' lives against the backdrop of their complex, tough neighborhood to produce a unique film.

Shattered Dreams

There are more than 150,000 migrant workers working legally in Taiwan, among whom more than half are from Thailand. To these migrant workers, working abroad in Taiwan is a risky gamble that the northeast Thai workers in this film weren't lucky enough to win. The electronics factory they'd been working in was suddenly closed down. The owner of the factory refused to pay the workers' salaries. The Thai workers were eventually deported back to Thailand after a futile fight, joined by other migrant and domestic workers, for their rights. Their dreams of a better life were shattered.

Sisyphus: Formosa

Relying on 671 questionnaires and many interviews with people born between 1980 and 1985, this film presents a situation that has thrown the director into a state of doubt and chaotic change, leading her to recognize her own ignorance of historical, political, and social issues. Why is national identity-a ubiquitous question among older generations-a non-issue to the young? The director hoped to find an answer. Taiwan is pulled in three directions by Taiwanese, Chinese, and Western influences, leading to contradictions in national, ethnic, and political identity.

Papa Blue

Her father's harsh words kept ringing in her ears. She tried to look for him. In her memories, he was always surrounded by a dark haze. That haze got darker and darker until she could not even see his face...A unique experimental film that integrates live action, documentary, and animation. A story about a father and daughter, and their journey through the disease of depression.

Jump! Boys

Seven boys from different backgrounds, each with his own personality and temperament, have one thing in common: after school, they don't play video games or hang out in McDonald's, but go straight to the gym to practice gymnastics. "No matter how hard it is, you keep practicing; when you're done crying, you keep practicing; when you're done yelling, you keep practicing; after you fall you get back up and keep practicing; no matter how much it hurts, you just keep on practicing." Are these kids crazy?

Yuning's Return

"Yuning's Return" chronicles the life of a female migrant worker as she struggles to support her family, which is falling apart. Yuning worked as a domestic worker in Taipei, sending all her money back home. Her hard work and determination to succeed, however, did not lead to a brighter future. Responding to the family's call for her to go home, Yuning ends her contract three months early and returns to Indonesia, where heartbreaking truths await in her family.

Waiting

In this material world where values have been quantified, different environments reveal stark distinctions. Only true feelings can fill in the painful gap. Human dignity is glorified in these differences. What this old couple expects from life and from fate, their touching dependence on each other, make them noblemen in the streets of Jakarta, under the twisted appearance caused by leprosy. They pose quietly and wait, yet speak the most touching words…

To See or Not To See

The night is deep, the neon lights glitter: Kaohsiung is much more alive in the dark. Chauffeurs ferry the Mainland ladies to and from the red-light districts. In the glamorous shadows of the city's bright lights, flesh is nakely for sale. As cross-Strait marriages have become common, the sex trade has seized on a new opportunity, using fake marriages to bring Mainland women to work as prostitutes in Taiwan. This new marginal group already provides the majority of Taiwan's sex trade.

Radio Mihu

"This is 91.3 FM, the indigenous voice of Mihu Radio. Good morning, I'm Bayas. Turn your dial to this underground station and hear about our tribe's pears and persimmons, and tune into the gossip about stream beds and mudslides…" Bayas's sharp, witty commentary takes us through one aboriginal tribe's village reconstruction after the disasterous earthquake of September 21, 1999 (commonly called 9-2-1). The film shows how village oppositions and conflicts, absurd yet everyday, are just like those of Taiwan itself, in miniature.
