在中國，對創作及言論自由的打壓越烈；在香港，紀錄片拍攝也越趨不易。然而，堅毅強硬、富含生命力的紀錄片作品卻仍不斷誕生。「敬」不只是「禁」的諧音，也代表著致敬與敬佩。

Dumb Men

People in my hometown call those who are shy and untalkative touxiuzi. Within this courtyard, the touxiuzi gene is embodied in the members of three generations. As a touxiuzi in our family, I try to uncover and open up the real heart beating under our touxiuzi exterior, yet in the end I only open up myself. The touxiuzi in the family continue to circle in the air above the village and grow in the village’s soil.

Shang' Ajia

The film portrays two Lisu brothers aged 10 and 17 living in the Biluo Mountain where Nujiang River passes. After their father died, their mother remarried and settled at the foot of the mountain, leaving the boys to her mother and brother. There is no school on the mountain and kids spend their time shouldering the family chores. Even with the misfortune and hardship, simple happiness is never far from their life.

Lost in the Fumes

Edward LEUNG was an average student before he unexpectedly finds himself at the focal point of two Legislative Council elections. Despite winning over 60,000 votes in the by-election, his ticket to LegCo is forfeited when the regime imposes extra measures in the nomination process. On the other hand, Edward finds his free days numbered as he faces rioting charges for taking part in the Mong Kok Protest.

In this documentary, there are no political conflicts, no shocking or fantastic stories or characters. It is only a record of parts of some people’s daily life.

Expressionism

I have been documenting artist HUA Yong for three years from time to time. The filming was always accompanied by accidents and changes. Since his histrionic personality disorder made him the best storyteller, I found a guy who, like HUA Yong, is tall and big, speaks with a Northeastern accent and paints expressionist paintings; I wanted to lock them up in a shack to perform the ‘Stanford prison experiment’.

The Day 3

Since 2010 WEI Xiaobo has been documenting his and his girlfriend’s lives and produced a series of films titled ‘The Days’. This film focuses on the happenings between 2013 and 2017, when the two get married and encounter some new problems.

Salute! Chinese Independent Documentaries

While restrictions over creative work and freedom of speech tighten in China and documentary filmmaking becomes more difficult in practice in Hong Kong, sturdy and vigorous works are still emerging. This programme is a salute to those who stand in the strong wind.
