記錄 X 記憶：聲音

人的記憶，由不同的感知經驗所組成，除了觀看，聆聽也是非常重要的一環。我們說「看」電影，往往低估了聽覺「顯而不見」的重要性。紀錄片的聲音元素，除了訪談、旁白、音樂，還有各種聲響與音效的使用；音景中聲源可見與不可見、音訊的遠近高低，都不知不覺影響著觀眾的感受。本單元中特別選映七部聲音運用獨特的紀錄片，並邀請聲音藝術家創作三部全新的「聲音紀錄片」，探討如何運用聲音，召喚真實。

Sound Hunting

Production and sale of Fujichrome RT200 sound film stock ended in 1999. It was the ultimate analogue technology allowing audio to be simultaneously recorded. As the director develops his film shot with expired RT200 stock, unique visuals and sounds begin to emerge.

The Danube Exodus

This travelogue documents the Jewish exodus from Slovakia just before the beginning of WWII. In two boats, a group of nine hundred Jews tried to reach the Black Sea via the river Danube, to get to Palestine from there. It is based on the amateur films of the captain of one of the boats.

Electro-Pythagoras: A Portrait of Martin Bartlett

This film pays tribute to the work and musical ideas of Martin BARTLETT, a proudly gay Canadian composer who in the 1970s and 1980s pioneered the use of the ‘microcomputer’. He researched intimate relationships with technology, yet is hardly recognised in cultural life.

The War that Never Was

The director interviews his mother, born in 1938 in a poor region of Taiwan, about her life as a wife, a mother and a labourer. The questions juxtapose important family moments with historical events during the Cold War, presented as photos, film and sketches.

Leviathan

Filmed off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts – the US’s largest fishing port and MELVILLE’s inspiration for Moby Dick – Leviathan follows a large groundfish trawler into the surrounding murky waters on a weeks-long fishing expedition and present a vivid representation of the work, the sea, the machinery and the human and marine players. It is entirely dialogue-free, but mesmerising and gripping throughout.

In the Stillness of Sounds

Marc devotes the majority of his time to his passion of sound. This existential quest leads him to put down roots, and start his family, on the edge of a forest in the Vosges Mountains. As the sun sets, he hides his microphones in the undergrowth, starts recording, and recedes into nature. Back home in his basement studio, Marc listens to his recordings in search of the extra-ordinary.

Blue

Set against an unchanging blue screen that echoes the artist’s fading eyesight after being treated for AIDS, Derek JARMAN’s last film Blue has a densely interwoven soundtrack of voices, sound effects and music that evokes powerful images of the mental, physical and emotional strain caused by his terminal illness.

Waterland

The island is a giant water park. We eat food from the ocean; we gather and fall in love by the ocean. Our happiness sparkles by the ocean. But whose wonderland has it been? Whose wonderland will it be? Ocean is beautiful. Its sounds are beautiful. Each part of the ocean has its characters. This time we don’t have to say more about it. We only listen to the ocean and the sounds of people living with the ocean.

Jiātíng Gōngchǎng

Jiātíng Gōngchǎng listens to the sounds of small-scale home factories found in the back alleys of Tainan City: the machinery, its operators and surroundings. Light industry rhythms merge with the domestic sound of changing neighbourhoods.

Forests

Cut down trees to build a shelter or an industry of timber. Lie on the forest floor to rest, to be born or to die. Enter the mountain like undergoing a sacred ritual or a conqueror opening a new road. Listen closely to the voices of animals living in the forests and to the words of people who are connected to the forests and mountains.

Documemory: Sound

Our memory consists of different senses, including everything we see and hear. Film sound - which can heighten a mood, provide information, advance the plot, and tell the story - is usually overlooked. This programme presents 7 documentaries in which voices, music, ambient sounds, sound effects, and sound archive are used in different ways. Moreover, 3 newly produced audio documentary works (exclusively for the ears) will be played in the cinema.
