Shanghai Family Value

Synopsis

Shanghai Family Value is an observational documentary structured around the director’s childhood home in the old French quarter of Shanghai. The central story line unfolds around her ongoing effort to understand the new and old Chinese society by focusing on the house which her mother built and owned in the forties. Keeping with her role as an observer, the filmmaker attempts to explore the contrasts between Chinese and Western perceptions about society, decision-making and time. This leads us to the universal question: what is memory?
